Purchase Real Estate With Your IRA

The DOW fell 313 points today.  Are you frustrated with your investment returns in the stock market, and tired of watching your hard earned savings evaporate on Wall Street?  Would you prefer to invest in a tangible asset like real estate, but can't touch your retirement savings without significant tax consequences?

It might surprise you to know that you can invest in real estate using funds from your IRA.  This method of investing is called a "Self-Directed IRA".  This type of real estate purchase is for investment purposes only, and you must follow IRS regulations.  For example,
you must transfer your IRA funds to a self-directed IRA administrator prior to purchasing a property, and the property must be titled in a specific way to ensure that the property remains an IRA investment.  Seek advice from your tax professional to determine if this investment is appropriate for your financial situation.

There are many benefits to purchasing real estate within your IRA.  The most important benefit is that you will not pay capital gains tax when selling the property, and when the proceeds from the sale are reinvested in the IRA, there is no tax on the growth.  This method of investing puts you in control of your own retirement nest egg vs. putting the control in the hands of an unknown fund manager.

I have always been interested in this but was talked out of it by my CPA who says if the price drops it could do you IRA and you would have to pay taxes and penalties. Is there anyone you could recommend here

Joyce, I would suggest talking with another CPA who is experienced with this investment option as many do not understand it.
